A trip to Florence is incomplete without a trip into the Tuscan countryside to soak in some sun, wine and a good spa.

Fonteverde definitely offers that and more.

A drive from the airport in Rome straight into the heart of Tuscany is a great way to start your holiday on the right foot. If you opt for the good old fashioned map idea over the GPS, be prepared to drive through multiple heards of goats, wondering just how lost you fact are and whether your Tuscan villa dream is about to turn into a smelly stay at a goat farm.

If you persevere, you will find a gorgeous town atop a small hill and the majestic gates of the Medici villa beckoning.

Through the gates, into the open air car park looking over the rolling hills…for us, check-in had to wait for the Russian and his stunning bride to finish at reception, so Campari spritz overlooking the pool it was.

Why check in when you can watch the sun set for hours, through olive groves and over the pool, spritzing – with local olives and salty potato chips thrown in?

The morning calls for a dip in the pool over breakfast. Families were welcome, and those we saw at a pool below were with small children laughing gently and playing delightfully in the water.

The perfect place to immerse yourself in the Italian countryside. The Medici’s obviously thought so, and we certainly have to agree.
