There are a number of ways that you can help your skin from home. Simple and effective, these are an important compliment to your psoriasis management.
Keeping your showers short and cool will definitely help to sooth your psoriasis. Too much heat will aggravate your condition and could cause a flare.
Oil baths are also excellent for soothing your skin, but remember to keep the temperature cool – a good option for summer!
Don’t use soap on your skin! This will dry and aggravate your skin. Opt for a soap free wash instead.
La Roche Posay’s Lipikar Syndet AP+ is our preferred wash and moisturiser for our psoriasis patients with a highly soothing formula. The wash is a soap free, fragrance free wash with no surfactants (and will not foam) and is very sensitive for psoriasis prone skin.
The Syndet AP+ formula contains glycerine and Shea butter which is very nourishing, leaving you feel more moisturised afterwards. It also contains bacterial lysate which is clinically proven to modulate the skin’s biome. This helps to space out the incidence of your flare ups and keeps your skins flora and fauna in balance.
For your hair and scalp, using a tar shampoo will provide the best relief for your scalp. We recommend Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo.
Creating a skin barrier
For psoriasis prone skin, keeping moisturised is key. There is a real deficiency in the barrier function of psoriasis prone skin and environmental irritants can also worsen the condition.
Keeping your skin well moisturised with non-irritant products such as La Roche Posay’s Lipikar Syndet AP+ will provide real relief. The AP+ formula contains lipids such as glycerine, canola and Shea butter, for nourishing the skin, sealed in with Dimethicone to create an artificial barrier on the skin to help prevent trans-epidermal water loss. The Syndet AP+ moisturiser also contains 4% Niacinamide which is a Vitamin B3, an anti-irritation ingredient which is very calming and soothing. It helps to inhibit histamine release, which will sooth itching and reduce scratching the skin.
Repairing your skin
A wound repair cream such as Cicaplast Baume B5 is a key product to keep in your cupboard to help speed up wound repair and relieve the visible symptoms of psoriasis. It contains 5% Panthenol to repair skin, Dimethicone to create a barrier and Madecassoside which is an anti- bacterial which assist in speeding up the epithelisation process.
Makeup that lets your skin breathe
Mineral Makeup is the best way to keep your skin healthy while looking your best every day. It allows your skin to breathe, rather than smothering it with chemical based makeups.
We recommend Jane Iredale for our patients, which is a 100% mineral makeup range and includes both base tints and colour ranges. We also provide fee makeup matching sessions with our nurses and therapists.
