What Is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where patients are often left with large patches of de-pigmented skin. This depigmentation can range from small patches to large areas of the body and can have significant psycho-social consequences. Patients often withdraw socially and wear clothes to cover affected areas of their body.
Most images in the public arena are of people with darker skin tones, as the colour difference is much more immediately noticeable, however this condition is also found in people with fair skin.
Areas of the body where this condition often first manifests itself is around the extremities such as the eyes, nose, underarms and hands.
Can It Be Treated?
Yes, vitiligo can be treated with varying degrees of success. The type of treatments used depends upon the stage of vitiligo that the patient presents with.
UVB Therapy is an extremely effective, safe treatment option that can be used from when the very first signs of vitiligo begin to appear, through to advanced large scale pigment loss. These UVB treatments are fully covered by medicare, making this a very affordable, effective treatment.
UVB therapy is often combined with anti-inflammatory and vitamin D creams to provide optimal improvement for patients.
ReCell® is a new technology which is used to treat stable, non-progressive vitiligo for patients who have been unsuccessful with previous treatments.
